'Coalition for Trusted Reviews': Amazon, Booking.com, Expedia, Glassdoor, Tripadvisor & Trustpilot Join Forces

In a significant move to restore trust in online reviews, several of the internet's most frequented platforms have announced a collaborative effort to tackle the pervasive issue of fake reviews. Amazon, Glassdoor, Trustpilot, and major travel companies such as Expedia Group, Booking.com, and Tripadvisor have come together to launch the "Coalition for Trusted Reviews." This initiative aims to ensure that consumers worldwide have access to genuine and reliable reviews.

The coalition's inception can be traced back to the first-ever Fake Reviews Conference held in San Francisco in October 2022, organized by Tripadvisor. The event saw experts from government, academia, and the broader industry discuss the challenges and potential solutions related to fake reviews. This dialogue culminated in the establishment of a formal coalition, dedicated to public education and continuous information sharing among members to curb review fraud.

In an official press release, Dharmesh Mehta, VP, Amazon, Worldwide Selling Partner Services said, "Customer reviews are an important part of the shopping experience, and the goal of this coalition is to ensure every review reflects customers’ actual experiences. Amazon is aggressively fighting fake review brokers to protect our customers and selling partners, but these fraudsters are a global problem, impacting multiple industry sectors. Through greater collaboration and sharing across industries, including information on fraudsters’ tactics and how they operate, we can more effectively shut down fraudulent review activity, deter other bad actors from attempting to game our systems, and protect more consumers.”

According to AP News, the coalition's primary objective is to "protect access to 'trustworthy consumer reviews' worldwide." The member companies of this coalition will actively seek best practices for hosting online reviews and will collaborate on methods to detect and counteract fake reviews. This includes the development of standards that define a fake review and sharing insights about the tactics employed by malicious actors in the review space.

Fake reviews have been a longstanding issue for online marketplaces, often undermining the trust consumers place in these platforms. A significant part of the problem stems from brokers who actively solicit fake customer reviews on various platforms, including social media and encrypted messaging apps. These brokers often offer money, free items, or other incentives in exchange for positive reviews to boost sales for businesses or sellers. Conversely, they can also post negative reviews to harm competitors.

Key areas of focus for the coalition include:
  • Industry Alignment: Crafting universal standards and definitions concerning fake reviews and related content moderation terminology.
  • Best Practice Sharing: Establishing best practices for hosting online reviews and disseminating information on updated content moderation processes and fake review detection techniques.
  • Information Sharing: Exchanging insights on the modus operandi of fraudulent actors, such as entities selling fake reviews to businesses aiming to unjustly enhance their online reputation.
  • Advocacy: Collaborating with academics and public policy leaders to champion the advantages of genuine review content and support industry-wide efforts to prevent the publication of fake reviews.
The coalition's mission is rooted in upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability. Through collective endeavors, they aspire to pioneer new benchmarks for preserving the genuineness of reviews, thereby bolstering consumer confidence globally. The coalition is set to reconvene in Brussels on December 5-6th at the second Fake Reviews Conference, spearheaded by Amazon.
