eBay has launched its Authenticity Guarantee service for trading cards in the United Kingdom, becoming the first online marketplace in the country to offer automatic authentication for qualifying high-value card purchases.

The new service will initially apply to eligible trading cards priced at £500 and above on eBay UK. The rollout began on May 6 and is expected to expand throughout the month, with all qualifying trading card listings expected to be covered by June.

The move marks another major step in eBay’s growing focus on collector categories and high-value collectibles. The company already offers similar authentication services for luxury watches, handbags and sneakers in several markets.

Trading cards remain one of the fastest-growing categories in the global collectibles market. Demand has continued to rise among sports fans, gaming enthusiasts and investors, especially for rare Pokémon cards, Formula 1 collectibles and vintage sports trading cards.

Building trust in the trading card market
According to eBay, the Authenticity Guarantee service is designed to increase buyer confidence and reduce concerns about counterfeit cards, altered items and misleading listings.

Under the system, once an eligible card is sold, the seller ships the item to eBay’s authentication facility instead of directly to the buyer. The card then undergoes a detailed inspection by authentication partner [Professional Sports Authenticator PSA before being forwarded to the customer through tracked next-day delivery.

Adam Ireland, Vice President and General Manager of Global Collectables at eBay, said trust plays a critical role in the collectibles business.

He said the expansion of the Authenticity Guarantee service for trading cards in the UK will offer buyers and sellers a safer and more reliable experience for high-value transactions.

How the authentication process works
The authentication process includes several layers of verification.

Inspectors compare the trading card with the original listing description and check details such as condition, print quality, authenticity and overall presentation using PSA’s database and expertise.

Once verified, the card receives a tamper-evident electronic tag with a unique QR code attached to the protective packaging. Buyers can scan the code to view authentication details and track the item’s verification journey.

eBay said the system also protects sellers. If a seller accepts returns, the returned item will again pass through the authentication centre to confirm that the same verified card is being sent back.

The service will also cover eligible purchases made through eBay Live, the company’s live shopping and auction streaming platform. This means collectors purchasing expensive trading cards during live-stream events will receive the same authentication protection.

Strong UK demand for trading cards
eBay shared several insights into UK trading card trends. Pokémon cards such as Charizard ex and Ancient Mew ranked among the most searched trading cards on the platform in 2025.

The highest-value trading card sold in the UK on eBay was a 1999 Pokémon 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard Base Set Holo Rare card graded BGS 9 Mint, which sold for £16,500.

Football remains the leading sports category in UK trading card searches, with Arsenal F.C. emerging as the most searched football club in the trading card category.

Meanwhile, Lando Norris became the most searched British athlete on eBay UK in 2025, highlighting the growing popularity of Formula 1 collectibles.

What this means for sellers and buyers
The launch could benefit both professional and casual sellers by helping their listings stand out and increasing buyer confidence in premium card purchases.

Eligible listings will display a blue Authenticity Guarantee badge, making it easier for buyers to identify verified products.

For collectors, the service reduces risks associated with counterfeit or inaccurately described cards. For sellers, it may help attract more serious buyers willing to spend on authenticated collectibles.

As the global trading card market continues to expand, eBay’s latest move signals that authentication and trust are becoming increasingly important for online collectible sales.
