Etsy to strengthen video content support for sellers

Marketplace appears to be expanding seller education across YouTube, email, social media and community channels. Etsy is preparing to strengthen its video-led content strategy for sellers, a move that could help shop owners learn faster, improve product presentation and make better use of visual storytelling to attract buyers.

According to EcommerceBytes, Etsy is looking to hire a contract employee with YouTube expertise to support campaigns across email, social, video and community channels. The report said the role is linked to Etsy’s Seller Content Marketing team, suggesting that the marketplace wants to increase practical, seller-focused video content.

Why video matters for online selling
The move is important because video has become a major tool for online selling. For handmade, vintage and creative products, videos can show details that static images often cannot capture. They can highlight product size, texture, movement, packaging, use cases and the making process.

Listing videos gain importance
Etsy already encourages sellers to use listing videos. Its help page says listing videos can give shoppers a better idea of a product and may also help improve how listings appear in Etsy search. Etsy allows one video per listing, with a duration of 3 to 15 seconds, and supports common formats such as MP4, MOV, AVI and MPEG.

For sellers, this means video should no longer be seen as an optional extra. A short product video can answer buyer questions before they are asked. For example, a jewellery seller can show shine and scale, a clothing seller can show fit and movement, and a craft seller can show handmade quality.

Building trust through storytelling
Etsy has also promoted broader video storytelling through its Seller Handbook. In its guidance on YouTube marketing, Etsy says sellers can use video to introduce themselves, reveal new products, show their production process and build a stronger connection with customers.

The timing is also significant. Etsy has been facing growing concerns over mass-produced goods, copycat listings and AI-generated products. In a 2024 interview, Etsy CEO Josh Silverman encouraged sellers to share process videos showing themselves making their products, saying such content can help artists and small business owners stand out on the platform.

Process videos as proof of authenticity
For genuine handmade sellers, this is an opportunity. Process videos can work as proof of authenticity. They can show the workspace, tools, materials and human effort behind a product. This helps buyers understand why handmade products may cost more than factory-made alternatives.

How sellers can benefit
Sellers can benefit from Etsy’s expected video push in three main ways. First, they can learn better selling techniques through official video education. Second, they can improve their listings by adding short product videos. Third, they can use behind-the-scenes content on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest to drive traffic back to their Etsy shops.

However, sellers should keep videos simple and useful. A good Etsy listing video does not need heavy editing. It should clearly show the product, avoid distracting backgrounds and focus on what a buyer wants to know before purchase.

Video becomes a seller advantage
Etsy’s plan to strengthen video content for sellers shows how marketplace education is shifting towards visual, practical and platform-friendly formats. For sellers, the message is clear: video can improve trust, product understanding and brand storytelling. Those who start using short listing videos and process-based content now may be better placed to stand out in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
