How Amazon's "Package Decision Engine" is Shrinking Boxes and Saving the Planet
Amazon’s Package Decision Engine uses artificial intelligence to optimize packaging
By Staff Writer
In a bid to combat excessive packaging waste and minimize its environmental impact, Amazon has deployed a powerful new tool: artificial intelligence. The company's innovative "Package Decision Engine" leverages AI to analyze millions of products and determine the most efficient packaging for each item, ensuring both product protection and minimal waste.
In an official post on Seller Central, Amazon said that its AI-powered system analyzes various data points, including product dimensions, descriptions, customer feedback, and even keywords associated with fragility. As Kayla Fenton, senior manager of technology products with Amazon's Packaging Innovation team, explains, "We wanted the ability to quickly identify the most efficient packaging option for each item, while also predicting how safely each product would ship."
Amazon claims the Package Decision Engine has proven remarkably successful, learning and adapting over time to optimize packaging choices. "The use of AI through the Package Decision Engine has allowed us to advance our packaging efficiency work at scale quickly," says Fenton. This innovative approach has enabled Amazon to avoid over 2 million tons of packaging material since 2015, significantly reducing its environmental footprint.

AI Learns to Pack Smarter
The AI model behind the Package Decision Engine constantly learns and analyzes successful deliveries and instances of damaged products to refine its understanding of optimal packaging. It identifies keywords that indicate fragility, such as "screen" or "stoneware," and recommends sturdier packaging options. Conversely, keywords like "multipack" or "shrink" suggest existing protective packaging, allowing the AI to recommend less material.
Global Rollout for a Greener Future
The success of the Package Decision Engine has prompted Amazon to expand its implementation globally. The AI is being trained to adapt to different languages, unique packaging types, and products sold in various countries. This global rollout promises to further reduce Amazon's environmental impact and promote sustainable practices worldwide.
By harnessing the power of AI, Amazon is taking a significant step towards a greener future, demonstrating that technological innovation can be a powerful tool for environmental responsibility.
