Amazon AWD Expands to Five European Markets With Long-Term Bulk Storage

European sellers will soon have another way to store larger quantities of inventory outside the standard Fulfilment by Amazon network. Amazon Warehousing and Distribution, commonly known as AWD, will become available in five major European markets on August 20, 2026.

The expansion covers Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. It could help sellers maintain additional stock near Amazon’s fulfilment network without relying entirely on their available FBA storage capacity. The update was published on Seller Central under the title “Access long-term bulk storage with AWD in Europe.” Amazon described AWD as a bulk-storage solution with automated replenishment to FBA fulfilment centres across Europe.

How AWD fits into Amazon’s fulfilment network
AWD is designed to operate as an upstream inventory-storage layer. Sellers send eligible products in bulk to Amazon distribution centres, where the inventory can remain until it is required at an FBA fulfilment centre.

FBA continues to handle customer-facing fulfilment, including picking, packing, shipping and eligible returns. AWD, meanwhile, stores reserve inventory and transfers products into the FBA network as needed. This distinction is important. AWD does not replace FBA. It supports FBA by holding additional inventory and replenishing fulfilment centres automatically.

Additional capacity without standard FBA constraints
One of the main benefits is access to additional storage capacity. Sellers can place eligible inventory in AWD even when they want to avoid sending their entire stock directly into the FBA network. This may be particularly useful for sellers with seasonal products, fast-moving listings or large replenishment orders. It could also help businesses importing inventory in bulk and those preparing for major sales periods such as Prime events, Black Friday and the Christmas shopping season.

Amazon says inventory stored in AWD will not be subject to the same capacity constraints that apply to inventory sent directly to FBA. Sellers should, however, confirm product eligibility, shipment requirements and any account-level restrictions before creating shipments.

Automated replenishment could reduce stock-outs
AWD will monitor inventory requirements and automatically replenish FBA fulfilment centres. This reduces the need for sellers to calculate and arrange every restocking transfer manually. Automated replenishment could help sellers maintain healthier FBA inventory levels and reduce the risk of losing sales because a product is temporarily unavailable.

It may also allow sellers to send larger inbound shipments to AWD and let Amazon move smaller quantities into FBA when required. This can simplify inventory planning for businesses managing several products or selling across multiple European marketplaces.

Sellers should still monitor demand forecasts, sales velocity and available AWD inventory. Automated replenishment cannot prevent stock-outs if the seller’s total reserve inventory is insufficient or inbound shipments are delayed.

Flat-rate long-term storage
Amazon says AWD will offer flat-rate storage regardless of how long inventory remains in the distribution centre. The programme will not require a long-term commitment. A more predictable storage structure could help sellers calculate inventory-holding costs, particularly for products that need to remain in reserve for several months.

However, flat-rate storage should not be interpreted as meaning every AWD service is covered by a single charge. Sellers should review the European fee schedule and programme terms when they become available. Storage, inbound transportation, processing and transfers to FBA may be treated as separate cost components.

Possible discounts for combining Amazon services
Sellers may qualify for discounts on storage and transportation when AWD is used alongside other eligible Amazon supply-chain services. The value of these discounts will depend on the seller’s shipment routes, inventory volume, product characteristics and use of other Amazon logistics programmes. Sellers should compare the complete landed cost against third-party warehousing and freight options before moving substantial inventory into AWD.

Who could benefit from European AWD
The programme may be particularly useful for:
i) Sellers importing large quantities into Europe and requiring intermediate bulk storage.
ii) Businesses affected by FBA capacity limits during peak periods.
iii) Brands selling fast-moving products that need regular replenishment.
iv) Sellers operating across several European Amazon marketplaces.
v) Businesses seeking to reduce manual FBA restocking work.
vi) Seasonal sellers who need reserve inventory positioned closer to Amazon’s network.

Products with unpredictable or very slow demand may require closer cost analysis. Sellers should avoid treating AWD as a destination for inventory that has little chance of selling, even when the storage rate is predictable.

What sellers should check before August 20
Interested sellers should first review the AWD Europe programme terms and product-eligibility rules in Seller Central. Not every product may qualify for the service. Businesses should also examine the new fee schedule, inbound-shipment process, carton and pallet requirements, supported origins, inventory-removal options and replenishment settings.

Cross-border sellers must continue to consider VAT registration, customs obligations and product-compliance requirements. Storing or moving inventory through Amazon’s European network can create tax or regulatory responsibilities in additional countries. AWD participation does not remove those obligations.

Sellers can prepare by identifying products with steady demand, calculating the amount of reserve stock required and comparing AWD costs with their current warehouse arrangements. Beginning with a limited number of suitable products may provide a safer way to assess the service before committing larger volumes.

A potentially important supply-chain option
The August 20 launch will extend Amazon’s bulk-storage and automated-replenishment model to five of its most important European marketplaces. For eligible sellers, AWD could provide more storage flexibility, reduce manual transfers and improve FBA stock availability.

The programme will be most valuable when it is used as part of a carefully planned inventory strategy. Sellers should review the final European fees and policies, confirm tax and product-compliance implications and compare total costs before sending inventory. For businesses facing FBA capacity pressure or frequent stock-outs, the update offers an opportunity to position reserve stock within Amazon’s network while keeping FBA replenishment largely automated.
