Amazon has taken another major step in reshaping how urban consumers shop for daily essentials. In an official blog post, Amazon announced the launch of Amazon Now, a new ultra-fast delivery service that promises to deliver groceries and household essentials in about 30 minutes or less. The service is being tested in parts of London, offering customers faster access to everyday products without the need for advance planning.

What is Amazon Now
According to details shared by Amazon in its official blog, Amazon Now is designed to meet the growing demand for speed and convenience in online shopping. The service is currently available in select postcodes in Southwark, South-East London, and allows customers to order thousands of items through the Amazon app or website. Amazon said Amazon Now operates seven days a week and offers products across 35 categories. These include fresh groceries, household essentials, health products, and daily-use items that customers often need at short notice.

What customers can order
Shoppers using Amazon Now can choose from a wide selection of products such as milk, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, protein snacks, vitamins, supplements, pet treats, nappies, toothpaste, and over-the-counter medicines. Amazon noted that the service also includes low and no-alcohol drinks, reflecting changing consumer preferences. The focus is on fast-moving and frequently purchased items, making Amazon Now particularly useful for last-minute needs or quick restocking at home.

How Amazon is enabling faster delivery
Amazon highlighted that ultra-fast delivery is not simply about moving faster but about smarter logistics. The company has invested heavily in placing products closer to customers, reducing the distance items need to travel. “Amazon Now brings a new level of speed and convenience to customers, delivering thousands of groceries and household essentials in less than 30 minutes,” said John Boumphrey, UK Country Manager of Amazon. He added that the service builds on Amazon’s existing same-day and one-day delivery network across the UK.

Prime benefits and delivery fees
Amazon Now also adds another benefit for Amazon Prime members. Prime customers will pay discounted delivery fees starting at £1.99 per order, compared to £3.99 for non-Prime users. A £2 fee applies to all orders under £15, regardless of membership. Amazon said this pricing structure is aimed at balancing speed, affordability, and convenience, while encouraging customers to bundle items when possible.

Growing demand for everyday essentials
Amazon revealed that groceries and household essentials now account for roughly one in three items ordered daily on its platform. In early 2025, the Everyday Essentials category grew nearly twice as fast as other product categories, underlining why Amazon is expanding faster delivery options in this segment. Amazon Now customers will have access to a curated selection of the most popular items in this category, tailored for quick delivery.

Expansion plans and UK investment
For now, Amazon Now is limited to select Southwark postcodes, but Amazon confirmed plans to expand the service to more areas in the coming months. Eligible customers can find Amazon Now through the menu on the Amazon homepage or app. The launch follows Amazon’s announcement of a £40 billion investment in the UK over the next three years, aimed at strengthening logistics, creating jobs, and driving innovation.

With Amazon Now, Amazon is signalling its intent to make ultra-fast delivery a mainstream option rather than a niche service. For London shoppers, especially those with busy schedules, the new offering could change how everyday essentials are purchased. As Amazon expands the service to more areas, Amazon Now may set new expectations for speed and convenience in online grocery and essentials shopping across the UK.
