Amazon Outlet Offers Sellers a Back-to-School Inventory Clearance Opportunity

Back-to-school shopping is creating a timely sales opportunity for Amazon sellers carrying excess or aging inventory. Products such as school supplies, dorm-room essentials, electronics and college accessories may receive greater customer attention during this period.
Amazon is encouraging eligible sellers to use Amazon Outlet during its Back-to-School and Off to College shopping campaign, which runs through September 15. The update, titled “Boost your Back-to-School sales with Amazon Outlet,” was published on Amazon US Seller Central.
The campaign may help sellers clear slow-moving FBA products, recover capital tied up in inventory and reduce their exposure to future storage costs.
Amazon Outlet Can Help Move Excess FBA Inventory
Amazon Outlet is designed to help customers discover discounted products while allowing sellers to sell eligible overstocked and aging inventory.
During the back-to-school season, Outlet listings can benefit from increased visibility among shoppers actively searching for discounted products. This can be particularly useful for sellers with products that match seasonal demand but have remained in Amazon fulfillment centers longer than expected.
Potential product categories include stationery, backpacks, office supplies, storage products, small appliances, bedding, electronics, computer accessories and other dorm-room essentials.
However, sellers should not assume that every FBA product will qualify. Eligibility and the maximum permitted Outlet price are determined by Amazon. Sellers can check their current recommendations inside Seller Central.

Four Main Benefits Highlighted for Sellers
According to the Seller Central announcement, sellers using Amazon Outlet may receive higher visibility during the seasonal shopping period.
Selling excess units can also reduce the amount of aging inventory stored in Amazon fulfillment centers. This may help sellers limit storage-related expenses before additional surcharges increase their costs.
Reducing excess inventory can support better inventory performance. It may improve sell-through and contribute to a healthier Inventory Performance Index score.
Amazon also stated that sellers do not have to pay an additional deal fee for Outlet. The program uses inventory that is already stored through Fulfillment by Amazon.
How to Create an Amazon Outlet Deal
i) Sellers can begin by opening the Inventory section in Seller Central and selecting FBA Inventory.
ii) They should then apply the “Create Outlet deal recommendation” filter to identify eligible products.
iii) After selecting a recommended product, the seller can choose “Create Outlet deal” from the Action menu. The Outlet price must be equal to or lower than the maximum price displayed by Amazon.
The seller should carefully review the proposed start and end dates before submitting the deal. Submitting a product does not mean sellers should stop monitoring it. Pricing, inventory availability, sales velocity and deal performance should be checked throughout the campaign.
Review Profitability Before Setting the Outlet Price
An Outlet Deal can help generate sales, but the discount must still make financial sense. Before submitting a deal, sellers should calculate the expected revenue after referral fees, FBA fulfillment fees, storage costs, product costs and other applicable expenses. They should compare this amount with the cost of continuing to store the inventory or submitting a removal or liquidation order.
A lower margin may be acceptable when the main objective is to release working capital or avoid rising storage costs. However, sellers should avoid reducing the price without understanding the expected financial outcome.
Use Promotions Carefully to Encourage Larger Orders
Amazon also recommended setting up Buy X, Get Y promotions for relevant school supplies and college products. This type of promotion may encourage customers to purchase multiple units or combine related products. For example, a seller could promote notebooks with writing supplies or dormitory storage products with related accessories.
Sellers must ensure that promotion conditions are easy to understand. They should also check whether the promotion could overlap with another discount and produce an unintended final price.
Inventory Must Support Demand Through September 15
Sellers should confirm that their available FBA inventory can support sales during the campaign. An Outlet Deal may help move slow-selling stock, but a product could sell faster than expected once it receives more visibility. Running out of inventory too early may limit the seller’s ability to benefit from the remaining seasonal demand.
At the same time, sellers should avoid sending large quantities of new inventory without reviewing sales forecasts. The campaign is intended partly to reduce excess stock, so replenishment decisions should be based on actual demand and remaining selling time.
Listings Should Match Back-to-School Search Intent
Amazon advised sellers to optimize relevant listings with seasonal keywords such as “back-to-school,” “college essentials” and “dorm room.”
Keywords should only be used when they accurately describe the product. Sellers can review titles, bullet points, product descriptions, backend search terms and images to ensure that customers can quickly understand the product’s purpose. Listing improvements should follow Amazon’s product detail page policies. Sellers should avoid keyword stuffing or adding claims that are not supported by the product.
A Timely Inventory Management Opportunity
The Back-to-School and Off to College campaign gives eligible FBA sellers an opportunity to turn aging stock into sales before September 15. Amazon Outlet may be particularly useful for sellers facing slow sell-through, rising storage costs or too much capital tied up in seasonal inventory. The absence of an additional Outlet deal fee can make it an option worth comparing with standard discounts, removal orders and other inventory reduction methods.
Sellers should check the Amazon Outlet recommendations available in Seller Central, review their Deals Dashboard and examine Amazon Fulfillment Reports before acting. A careful combination of competitive pricing, accurate listing optimization, suitable promotions and inventory monitoring can help sellers make better use of the remaining back-to-school shopping period.
