eBay has added another layer of protection to its luxury watch resale business by integrating Enquirus into its Authenticity Guarantee process, a move aimed at strengthening trust among buyers and sellers of high-value watches.
Under the new arrangement, every watch that passes through eBay’s authentication service in the US, UK and Germany will be checked against Enquirus, described as the world’s largest free database for lost and stolen watches. The integration means eBay’s authentication process will now go beyond verifying authenticity and condition, adding a data-backed check to help identify watches reported as lost or stolen.

The move comes as online luxury resale platforms face growing pressure to improve buyer confidence, seller protection and traceability in high-value categories. Luxury watches are among the most sensitive resale products because even genuine items can carry ownership-related risks if they have previously been reported stolen.
eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee already requires eligible watches to be inspected by category experts before they are delivered to buyers. According to eBay’s watch authentication page, eligible watches priced at $2,000 and above automatically go through the authentication process, while select watches priced between $500 and $1,999.99 can access the service as an add-on.
With Enquirus now built into the process, eBay is positioning its watch authentication programme as a broader trust-and-safety tool rather than only a product verification service. Enquirus says its platform allows manufacturers, law enforcement, insurers and industry partners to register, report and search lost or stolen watches and jewellery, helping reduce the risk of such goods being bought, sold or serviced.
For sellers, the integration could help make eBay a more credible marketplace for luxury watches, especially for professional dealers and individual sellers handling expensive pre-owned items. A stronger authentication framework may reduce disputes, improve buyer confidence and support higher-value transactions.
For buyers, the additional check offers reassurance that a watch is not only authentic but also screened against a global lost-and-stolen database. This is important in the resale market, where provenance and clean ownership history are increasingly becoming part of the value proposition.
eBay has been investing in luxury authentication for several years. Its watch authentication efforts date back to the expansion of eBay Authenticate into luxury watches in 2018, followed by broader Authenticity Guarantee services for high-value watch transactions.
The Enquirus integration signals that authentication in online luxury resale is evolving from simple product inspection to a more comprehensive trust system involving expert checks, digital records and crime-prevention databases.
eBay’s integration of Enquirus marks a significant upgrade for its luxury watch authentication programme. For buyers, it adds another layer of confidence. For sellers, it may make the platform more attractive for high-value listings. More importantly, it shows how resale marketplaces are moving towards stronger verification systems as luxury goods become a major part of online commerce.
