Temu, a direct-from-factory e-commerce platform, has solidified its position as one of the fastest-growing apps in the United Kingdom. According to Similarweb's Digital 100 Report, Temu achieved a 53% year-over-year growth in monthly active users and now ranks as the second-fastest-growing app in the UK. Bolstered by a business model that minimizes supply-chain intermediaries, the platform has quickly captured consumer interest in both domestic and international markets.

Rapid UK Growth
The United Kingdom has emerged as a pivotal market for Temu, where monthly active users soared from 6.5 million in 2023 to 9.9 million in 2024. This trajectory reflects the brand's broader global success since its U.S. launch in September 2022. Temu expanded to Europe in 2023 and currently operates in more than 80 markets worldwide, aiming to keep costs low by streamlining operations and passing savings directly to consumers.

Apple's Top App Recognition
Beyond Similarweb's findings, Temu received another significant nod in 2024, ranking among Apple's top apps. App Store data showed that it was the most downloaded iPhone app in 25 of Apple's roughly 30 localized markets, including the UK. Analysts attribute this success partly to Temu's expansive product range, which appeals to diverse consumer needs. A study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) further estimates that the direct-from-factory approach could help average UK households save up to £3,000 annually.

Local-to-Local Initiative
Temu is placing greater emphasis on local sellers and warehouse fulfillment across the continent to bolster its European footprint and maintain rapid growth. The company aims for half of its UK sales to come from local sellers and warehouses by the end of 2025. Across Europe, this local-to-local model is expected to account for up to 80% of total sales in the coming years, allowing local businesses to showcase their products while speeding up customer delivery times.

Germany, France, Spain, and Italy are among the European markets already benefiting from Temu's local seller and warehouse dispatch services. Outside Europe, markets like the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan also have similar setups. This approach reduces logistics complexities and strengthens relationships with small and medium-sized enterprises, which can gain access to global customers through Temu's platform.

Global Success and Future Outlook
Temu's growth story is mirrored in other regions. The platform made waves in Australia, where Temu.com was labeled the fastest-growing website due to a 72% year-over-year increase in monthly unique visitors. Germany also recorded notable progress, with average monthly website usage hitting 15.1 million unique users in 2024, marking a 37% rise from the previous year.

Despite this impressive performance, some market observers caution that Temu's rapid ascent may slow down. A report by Forrester predicts a potential drop in growth rates for Temu and one of its main competitors, SHEIN, by 2025. Concerns include complaints over product quality, scrutiny of production processes, and environmental factors, all of which could prompt tighter regulations and shift consumer sentiment.

Temu's remarkable expansion demonstrates how innovative supply-chain strategies and competitive pricing can capture substantial market share in a crowded digital landscape. As the platform continues to invest in local partnerships and warehouse operations, its emphasis on supporting local sellers could help sustain momentum. However, analysts warn that maintaining growth will require addressing mounting scrutiny over production standards and environmental impact. Ultimately, Temu's challenge will be to balance its ambitious global goals with the need for responsible and transparent operations that resonate with increasingly discerning consumers.
