Walmart Commits $1.3 Billion to Expand in Chile
New Stores and Jobs Planned for Communities Across the Nation
Walmart has announced a significant investment in Chile, committing $1.3 billion over the next five years. This plan includes building 70 new stores and creating 4,000 jobs across the country. The announcement underlines the retailer’s ongoing goal to help Chileans save money and access quality products, even in the most remote parts of the country.
Major Investment in Local Communities
The investment reflects Walmart’s belief in Chile’s potential for growth. Speaking about the plan, Walmart Chile President and CEO Cristián Barrientos said, “This is not just an investment in infrastructure and technology; it is an investment in people, in communities.” By adding new stores and enhancing its services, Walmart aims to reach more neighborhoods and offer essential goods at affordable prices.
Alongside Barrientos, Walmart International President and CEO Kath McLay highlighted the company’s focus on value. “This announcement allows us to further enhance our value proposition to customers through low prices on basic products, as well as products and solutions that improve their quality of life,” said McLay.

Reaching the Southernmost Store
A symbolic event in Punta Arenas marked the beginning of this expansion plan. Punta Arenas is home to the southernmost Walmart store in the world—known locally as Lider. Supplying this store requires unique methods because of harsh weather and remote terrain. Some deliveries arrive by land, air, or sea, while others rely on a reserve system called “El Oso” (the bear) to ensure residents have essential items even when roads and borders close.
Walmart’s commitment goes even further. The Punta Arenas team developed an e-commerce strategy to serve Puerto Toro, the world’s southernmost permanently inhabited community with only 25 residents. Through ferry deliveries, Walmart brings products directly to this tiny settlement, demonstrating its goal of serving customers everywhere in Chile.
Boosting Supply Chain and Employment
Walmart plans to establish a ninth distribution center in southern Chile. This additional facility will help the company increase its omnichannel capacity, making getting goods to customers quickly and efficiently easier. Alongside the new stores, the extra jobs will also benefit local economies and provide growth opportunities for many Chileans.
Environmental Responsibility
Walmart has set global targets to become a regenerative company by 2040. As part of the Chile expansion, more than 50 stores will get solar panels, pushing the company closer to its goal of using 80% renewable energy. By 2025, 25 new recycling points will be set up nationwide. These steps mark Walmart’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and promoting greener shopping habits.
With a five-year, $1.3 billion investment, Walmart is paving the way for stronger connections between Chile’s diverse regions and modern retail services. From the northern highlands to the far south, these new stores, jobs, and distribution routes are designed to meet people’s basic needs and foster community growth. By focusing on accessibility, affordability, and sustainability, Walmart shows its dedication to supporting Chilean families today and for generations to come.
